Absorption of electron cyclotron radiation in tokamak plasmas with a superthermal tail in the electron velocity distribution

Description
A monotonically decreasing superthermal tail in the distribution of electron velocities parallel to the tokamak magnetic field is represented by adding a drifted Maxwellian distribution to a bulk Maxwellian distribution. This combines a high degree of flexibility in the set of tail parameters available with the possibility of obtaining exact analytic expressions for the dielectric tensor elements. Calculations have been carried out in the nonrelativistic limit, which restricts its applicability to the extraordinary mode away from normal incidence. A fully three-dimensional ray tracing code which includes the effects of toroidal geometry is employed. The results indicate that small tails (tail fraction ∼ 0.5%) can significantly alter the wave absorption characteristics. These include the integrated absorption, spatial deposition profile, and velocity space deposition profile. Due to the presence of tail electrons, significant heating above the high density cutoff is found for high field side louching with W = ωc (central), together with strong absorption at low density for low field side lounching with W << ωc (central). Uma cauda supertermica diminuindo monotonicamente numa distribuicao de velocidades dos eletrons paralelos ao campo magnetico do tokamak e representada pela adicao de uma distribuicao Maxwelliana alargada a uma distribuicao Maxwelliana aglomerada, isto combina um alto grau de flexibilidade num conjunto de parametros da cauda avaliavel com a possibilidade de obtencao de expressoes analiticos exatas para elementos do tensor dieletrico. Calculos foram realizados no limite nao-relativistico, que restrigem sua aplicabilidade ao modo extraordinario da incidencia normal. Um codigo de tracos de raios a tres dimensoes que inclui os efeitos da geometria toroidal e usado. Os resultados indicam que pequenas caudas (fracao da cauda ∼ 0,55) podem alterar significamente as caracteristicas de absorcao da onda. Este incluem a absorcao integrada, perfil de deposicao espacial, e perfil de deposicao no espaco de velocidade. Devido a presenca d eletros de cauda, aquecimento significante, acima do alto corte de densidade e encontrado para alto lancamento lateral do campo com W = ωc (central), junto com forte absorcao a baixa densidade para baixo lancamento lateral do campo. com W << ωc (central).
