Description

It is shown that repair efficiency of DNA single strand breaks induced by low dose irradiation can have an inhibiting action on manifestation of spontaneous DNA defects by means of enzymatic elimination of single strand breaks. With increasing dose and LET the inhibition effect of the single strand breaks gets competition with certain irreparable double strand break patterns, which are causing the radiation-induced cell transformations via chromosomal rearrangements. Turther investigations on repair mechanism are required. The problem of radiation carcinogenesis can be solved only in stimulating cooperation between radiation and molecular biology
