Study on autoacceleration of intense electron bunches in resonance system

Description

The paper is aimed at studying the possibility of using passive resonators for increasing the energy of a part of an intensive bunch. An experimental study of selfacceleration has been carried out on high current nanosecond accelerators ''Tonus'' with electron beam parameters of 20 kA, 100 ns, 600 keV and NSU-600 with parameters 10 kA, 30 ns, and 350 keV. Data on the radiation spectra of bunches passing through resonance systems of various types are given along with the results of calculations aimed to reveal the effect of the beam current pulse and resonator geometry on the maximum energy gain. It has been experimentally established that the electron spectrum changes substantially as a result of interaction with resonator of various types. Part of electrons in a bunch may have their energy doubled. It is shown that an appreciable increase in the energy of part of bunch electrons can be attained in diaphragmatic waveguides or in resonators whose basic wave lengs comparable with the length of an intensive bunch
