A test of self-organization hypothesis in Jovian and Saturnian wind systems

  • 1. Bell Labs., Murray Hill, NJ (USA)

Description

Result of the self-organization hypothesis is applied to explain the wind structures in the Jovian and the Saturnian atmospheres as observed recently by Voyager spacecrafts. Qualitative as well as quantitative agreements are obtained in the magnitude of the wind velocities and the widths of the zonal flow by means of fitting only one unknown parameter, phi = h/H, the relative variation of the atmospheric scale height.
