Thermal calorimeters for high resolution X-ray spectroscopy

Description

In spectroscopic experiments where high energy resolution and high efficiency are required the characteristics of conventional detectors may not be satisfactory. A new generation of detectors for X-ray and particle spectroscopy, thermal microcalorimeters, has been developed in the last 15 years in order to satisfy these requirements. The operating principle of microcalorimeters and their performances in terms of energy resolution, counting rate and detection efficiency are described in this paper. Some examples of applications are given
