Behaviour and monitoring of impurities in liquid sodium coolant of fast breeder reactors

  • 1. Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam (India). Materials Chemistry Div.

Description

Pure liquid sodium is a coolant used in the fast breeder reactor due to its superior compatibility with clad and structural materials in the coolant circuit. The presence of impurity like oxygen and carbon make sodium corrosive. The hydrogen built-up in sodium is an indicator of ingress of steam into sodium circuit. Materials Chemistry Division of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) has been developing suitable on-line chemical sensors for detecting low levels of oxygen, carbon and hydrogen. The present paper deals with the chemical effects of these impurities in sodium and the development of chemical sensors. (author). 50 refs., 6 figs
