D and E in crystalline, thyroid, salivary glands, mammary glands and gonads in orthopantomography exams

Description

The area of dentistry has two of the most common radiological studies which are: peri apical radiography and dental panoramic. The latter allows obtaining an image of the structure of the upper and lower jaw allowing to evaluate the development of a treatment or diagnosis of dental health. In this paper, the absorbed dose in crystalline lens, thyroid gland, salivary glands, mammary glands and gonads was measured using TLD-100 thermoluminescent dosimeters in patients undergoing dental panoramic radiography. The dose was measured in women and men of different complexions and ages ranging from 17 to 50 years, who attended a dental panoramic radiography at the Academic Unit of Dentistry of the Universidad Autonoma de Zacatecas. Each patient was placed with a package, with four thermoluminescent dosimeters on each organ that was studied; the packaging material is 2 mm thick polyethylene, thus ensuring electronic balance. The thermoluminescent dosimeters were calibrated with a source of Cesium 137. The results obtained from the absorbed dose were multiplied by the weighting factor of each organ to also obtain the effective dose, finding that the highest dose was obtained in salivary glands (30.4 μSv) and the lowest dose was obtained in thyroid (3.8 μSv).
