Description

Over the last several years, Canada has gone through a lengthy environmental assessment process dealing with the long-term management of nuclear fuel wastes and a concept for their deep rock disposal put forward by AECL. Broad public support is necessary in Canada to ensure the acceptability of any concept for managing nuclear fuel wastes. From a technical perspective, safety of the AECL concept has been on balance adequately demonstrated for a conceptual stage of development, but from a social perspective it has not. The AECL concept in its present form does not at this time have the required level of acceptability to be adopted as Canada's approach for managing its nuclear fuel wastes
