A new emergency personnel monitoring and decontamination facility at the Chalk River Nuclear laboratories of the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited - Research Company

This paper describes a new facility at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories (CRNL) which has been recently designed, constructed and commissioned to handle potential radiation and contamination emergencies at the site. The dedicated 18 m x 30 m facility includes high-through-put contamination-monitoring arrangements, personnel decontamination facilities, detailed monitoring and decontamination provisions and is considered capable of handling 1500 - 2000 people over a four-hour period. The basic facility 'design scenario' is described briefly, including the proportions of personnel considered to be highly (or lesser) contaminated. The results of the first full-scale practice evacuation exercise utilizing this new facility (1988 July) are discussed. (author). 6 figs.; 2 tabs
