Target heating by an intense relativistic electron beam

  • 1. Osaka Univ., Suita (Japan). Faculty of Engineering

Description

A solid target was bombareded by an intense relativistic electron beam. The electron temperature measured by means of the X-ray absorbing method was about 1–2 keV. The ion energy estimated by the time-of-flight method was in agreement with the electron temperature data. The experimental results are consistent with the theory based on an assumption that the energy deposition mechanism is the two stream instability, which is more effective than classical absorption.
