Vibrating-dust spheres in the Reissner-Nordstroem metric

  • 1. International school for advanced studies, SISSA - Trieste, Italy

Description

It is considered the collapse of a charged dust sphere with a charge Q larger than the mass M (both in geometrized units). It is shown that the outcome of collapse is most likely a stable, vibrating configuration. The period of the vibrations is of the order of 10-4 s for masses of the order of a solar mass. Optically such an object shows a quasi-steady red-shift which can be very large when Q is close to M
