Use of magnetic fields for reflection and storage of ultracold neutrons
Description
The results of experiments on the observation of complete reflection of ultracold neutrons (UCN) from the energy barrier produced by the magnetic field of a solenoid are presented. The experimental results confirm the theoretically predicted possibility of producing magnetic channels and traps for the transport and confinement of UCN. An experiment on the storage of UCN with energies of up to 48x10-9 J in a magnetic-wall trap is carried out, the UCN storage time being approximately 23 s. The possibility of using a UCN magnetic trap for measuring the lifetime of a free neutron and the probability of UCN depolarization is discussed
