Computerized localization of spaces between the ribs performed with use of a shift-variant sinusoidal pattern in order to aid lung texture analysis on digital chest images

Description

Accurate and rapid localization of appropriate inter-rib spaces in necessary in the development of automated methods to quantify lung textures on digital chest images. The authors have accomplished this by employing a shift-variant sinusoidal pattern to fit lung profiles across ribs and inter-rib spaces. Preliminary results show that 20-22 regions of interest for lung texture analysis are correctly determined in a few seconds from 1,024 x 1,024 digital chest images
