This paper, presented at the twelfth international conference on plasma physics and controlled nuclear fusion, held in Nice, France, 12-19 October, 1988, reports work on the INTOR design concept and how it would be modified in the light of new information. It also provides an analysis of critical technical issues that affect the feasibility of next generation tokamak experiments, innovations that could improve the tokamak as a reactor concept, and an analysis of the database that supports a next generation experiment. 1 tab
