STAR-H2: A 400 MWth lead-cooled, long refueling interval reactor for hydrogen production

Description

The Secure Transportable Autonomous Reactor for Hydrogen production (STAR-H2) is a modular fast reactor intended for the mid 21st century energy market. The energy supply system is envisioned to employ small (400 MWth) Battery' reactors operating of 15-20 year refueling interval of full core refueling cassettes. Regional fuel cycle centers perform full transuranic recycle to supply front and back end services (including waste disposal) to hundreds to thousands of such small battery reactors. In this system, electricity and hydrogen are employed as complementary energy carriers. A report on progress made in the first 24 months of a three-year NERI grant to develop this concept is provided here. (author)
