Analysis of the rare stable isotopes of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen using charged-particle induced prompt γ-rays

  • 1. Hammersmith Hospital, London (UK). M.R.C. Cyclotron Unit

Description

A method for the measurement of low-energy (<1100 keV) prompt γ-rays induced by 8 MeV protons, 16 MeV deuterons and 32 MeV α-particles in samples containing enrichments of 13C, 15N, 17O and 18O, is discussed. Interferences from the abundant stable isotopes of these elements are considered and the relative analytical potential of each particle is evaluated. Factors affecting sensitivity are appraised and several undocumented lines, suitable for use in quantitative analysis, are reported. (author)
