Development program for a 200 kW, c-w gyrotron. Quarterly report No. 6, October-December 1980
Description
The objective of this program is the design and development of a millimeter-wave device to produce 200 kW of continuous wave power at 60 GHz. The device, a gyrotron oscillator, will be compatible with power delivery to an electron-cyclotron plasma. Smooth control of rf power output over a 17 dB range is required, and the device should be capable of operation into a severe time-varying rf load mismatch. During this report period, the mechanical design of the first tube was completed. It was decided to abandon the design of a device with a 100 ms pulse capability and to concentrate on a CW gyrotron. Parts for the magnetron injection gun and cavity were received. Construction of the superconducting solenoid proceeded satisfactorily. A cathode-heater assembly was operated in a demountable vacuum station. Its emissive qualities were well within specification. Parts for vacuum processing, bake-out and testing were also received
