Comparison of simulated and observed surface currents used in oil-spill model

Description

OSRA, an Oil-Spill Risk Analysis model which is used to estimate the risks of oil spills, was discussed. A study was conducted to compare an OSRA model run using surface currents generated by a numerical ocean circulation model, with an OSRA run using Lagrangian drifter data (SCULP) as a supplement to the numerical surface current field. Both model runs were used to 'hindcast' an oil spill south of Galveston, Texas. The objective of the study was to use drifter observations directly in defining a horizontal and time-evolving surface current field to improve oil-spill trajectory analysis. Seasonal average surface-current vectors from the model were evaluated. The strengths and weakness of the model were described. 6 refs., 5 figs
