Approach to reliability in nuclear power plants

The basic concepts of reliability and availability are discussed in the context of the historical development of nuclear power plants. The measures that can be taken at the design and operating stages are reviewed. The need for representative failure data is stressed and current efforts in data collection are described. Useful data collections already exist in the electronic field and a considerable amount of analytical work has been done, in particular, on reactor protection systems
