Long-term objectives and tasks of energy research

The long-term objective of energy research policy will not change: to make contributions to solving problems of ensuring energy supply and to achieve this under circumstances that are economically as favourable as possible. The pressure exerted by environmental protection will increase: less pollutants; limited utilization of fossil energies; demand on the State for increasingly implementing research and development measures from an industrial policy point of view. We will have to develop and apply more and more intelligent technologies, promote high-technologies, and further expand our engineering knowledge potential. That means more understanding between industry and State, willingness to compromise, and interlocking of research activities, both in terms of content and finance. As regards nuclear energy: it will expand worldwide and continue improving technically. Joint interests in the field of energy research should be institutionalized, perhaps in the form of an energy agency. (orig./HSCH)
