Rayleigh's criterion for the neck stability in heavy-ion reactions and fission

Description
Rayleigh's stability criterion for a cylinder of a classical, incompressible fluid against pinching is generalized to a fluid with a diffuse surface, appropriate in particular for applications in nuclear physics. The stability is governed by the wavelength of the perturbation and the surface thickness, both in comparison to the cylinder radius. The stability diagram is constructed
