Reactor waste management in Ontario Hydro

The current practices and future needs of the reactor waste management program are reviewed, including practices and facilities at the generating station and at the waste operations site. The quantities and varied physical and radiological characteristics of the station emissions and solid wastes are summarized. Such wastes account for less than 0.001% of the radioactivity produced at an operating station. The application of the design objective to maintain annual average emissions to 1% or less of the maximum permissible is outlined and compared with current experience. The principles of the solid waste storage program are reviewed. Current volume reduction processes, which include incineration and mechanical compaction, are described and operating experience summarized. The status of conceptual design work on facilities planned for service in 1982-3 is reported, and longer term studies are outlined. (auth)
