Development of some dyed polymeric materials for application in radiation dosimetry
Description
The aim of the present thesis is the development of new dyed radiochromic and colorless plastic films and radiation indicating label (dyed polymer coating self-adhesive paper) based on radiation -sensitive di acetylenes and polydiacetylenes. It is also aimed to investigate the possibility of using those plastic films and labels as dosimeters and indicators for different applications of radiation processing technology. The 1st part of the thesis includes the preparation of radiation plastic film dosimeters based on poly(vinyl butyral)(PVB) and a synthesized radiation -sensitive monomer, namely 2,4-hexadiyne 1,6-diol (HD) (c.f. chapter IV.1). Diacetylene diol undergoes radiation polymerization when subjected to gamma rays inducing change in the absorption spectra in the UV region of the spectrum . Unirradiated film is colourless and has four absorption peaks at 220,232,245 and 259 nm. Upon irradiation two new peaks at 273 and 289 nm are developed and their amplitudes with the original peaks increase with the increase of absorbed dose. The useful dose range of this film is 0.5-65 kGy depending on HD concentration, so it can be used as routine dosimeter in the field of most of food irradiation applications, medical product sterilization and polymer modification
