NDE reliability and advanced NDE technology validation

Description

This paper is a review of three NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) research programs dealing with the nondestructive examination (NDE) of light water reactors. The focus of work has been assessing the reliability of NDE (with emphasis on computer-based NDE equipment) for finding defects of interest to structural integrity, developing methodology for the in-service inspection plan that overcomes NDE unreliability and provides greater assurance that unacceptable defects in primary systems will be reliably detected and accurately characterized. There has been extensive work with Section 11 and Section 5 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
