Comprehensive low level waste management

Description

Costs for transportation and burial of low level waste have become so prohibitive that alternative methods of processing packaging and disposal can be justified to reduce current spending levels. This paper presents various options for utility comprehensive waste management - incineration, high force compaction, and UNIPAK storage and disposal casks. Although these technologies are not new, the time has arrived when existing problems mandate their application. Experience with engineered barriers for low level waste disposal is also offered as a recommendation for incorporation in the design of new low level waste disposal sites in areas of the country where shallow land burial in unlined trenches may prove inadequate
