In situ tests on waste package components
Description
The performance of the different barriers of a geologic repository for radioactive waste is validated in view assessing the long-term safety of disposal. In situ tests aim at validating the investigations carried out in the laboratory. The performance of various candidate waste-package components (overpack, canister, waste form) has been studied by in situ experiments in the underground laboratory in the Boom clay formation (Mol, Belgium). The scientific programme, objectives, achievements in this research area at the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre SCK-CEN are summarized
