Isotope production considerations for new nuclear projects

  • 1. Laurentis Energy Partners, Toronto, ON (Canada)

Description

Harnessing nuclear power plants to produce medical isotopes provides enormous benefits to society and utilities. This paper explores the feasibility of isotope production for new nuclear projects and the advantage of incorporating production capabilities during the pre-design phase. The approach describes how key technical and commercial factors are considered to establish a short list of isotopes that are the most promising for production. The approach evaluates a series of physical and chemical attributes and key commercial factors. The paper also builds the case for integration of isotope production capabilities during pre-design phase, allowing for a proactive approach that will optimize design, operations, safety, and resource allocation. As this is an emerging technology, current integration of medical isotope production must be retrofitted into existing stations. Although feasible, this presents challenges including operational inefficiencies, high costs, and lower flexibility. By considering isotope production during initial design stages, reactors can be tailored to meet demands more efficiently and economically. Medical isotopes will secure the future of the broader nuclear industry by allowing operators to leverage assets to supply lifesaving isotopes to the world, providing opportunities for Indigenous partnerships, and strengthening social license by reshaping the way people think about nuclear.
