Nonlinear effects in the propagation of an ion beam across amagnetic field

Description

The plasma turbulence excited by an ion beam moving across a magnetic field is considerd. It is shown that for oscillations with a frequency which is not too close to the low-hybrid frequency, the main nonlinear process is induced scattering by the particles. The oscillation distribution in k3 space is found in the weak turbulence approximation. Induced scattering leads to cascading of oscillations toward the high-turbulence region, where modulation instability and collapse of the plasma waves play an important role. Due to the smallness of the phase volume of the strong turbulence zone, the energy flux into the plasma is determined by the region of weak turbulence and may be determined exactly. Energy dissapation is mainly determined by the strong turbulence effects. In this case the absorbed energy is transferred to the accelerated ions and electrons. It is shown that the distribution of the accelerated particles is of a power-law form, and in general most of the energy is transferred to the electrons
