Role of apical oxygen in 2-1-4 electron-doped superconductors

Description

We report a crystal-field infrared transmission and Raman study of oxygenated and reduced Nd2-xCexCuO4 single crystals. Some Nd3+ crystal-field absorption bands corresponding to rare-earth ions in non-regular sites are attributed to Nd3+ ions in the vicinity of apical oxygens. This is correlated with a study of the A* (∼580 cm-1) Raman local mode and with the transport properties of undoped materials. We show that the apical oxygen is not removed by the reduction
