Plasma heating by radiofrequency in the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR)

Description

The characteristics of the experimental set-up mounted in the Physical Institute of UFF (Brazil) to produce the gas ionization by radio-frequency are shown and its behaviour when confined by a mirror-geometry magnetic field is studied. The diagnostic is made by a langmuir probe and a prisme spectrogaph is used in order to verify the nature of the ionized helium gas and the degree of purity through its spectral lines. The argon ionization by R.f. is produced in the 'LISA' machine obtain a plasma column of approximatelly 60 cm length and with the Langmuir probe the study of the profile distribution of the plasma parameters such as: electron temperature and density and floating potencial in function of the magnetic field variation is made. The main focus is given to the fundamental electron cyclotron resonance (ECR). A new expression on the ion saturation current (I sub(is)) produced by radiofrequency is developed. (L.C.)

Abstract (Portuguese)

Mostram-se as caracteristicas do aparato experimental montado no Instituto de Fisica da UFF, para produzir a ionizacao do gas por radio frequencia e estudar o comportamento do mesmo quando confinado por um campo magnetico de geometria 'mirror'. O diagnostico e feito por sonda de Langmuir e usa-se ainda um espectrografo de prisma a fim de verificar a natureza do gas helio ionizado (He I ou He II) e o grau de pureza do mesmo atraves de suas raias espectrais. Produz-se ainda a ionizacao do argonio por R.F. na maquina 'LISA' obtendo-se uma coluna de plasma de aproximadamente 60 cm de extensao e com a sonda de Langmuir faz-se o estudo da distribuicao do perfil dos parametros do plasma tais como: temperatura (T sub(e)), densidade (n sub(e)) dos eletrons, potencial flutuante (v sub(f)) em funcao da variacao do campo magnetico. O enfoque principal e dado a ressonancia fundamental eletron ciclotron (ECR). Desenvolve-se uma nova expressao sobre corrente de saturacao de ions (I sub(is)), produzidos por radio frequencia.
