Study of essential safety features of a three-loop 1,000 MWe light water reactor (PWR) and a corresponding heavy water reactor (HWR) on the basis of the IAEA nuclear safety standards

Based on the IAEA Standards, essential safety aspects of a three-loop pressurized water reactor (1,000 MWe) and a corresponding heavy water reactor were studied by the TUeV Baden e.V. in cooperation with the Gabinete de Proteccao e Seguranca Nuclear, a department of the Ministry which is responsible for Nuclear power plants in Portugal. As the fundamental principles of this study the design data for the light water reactor and the heavy water reactor provided in the safety analysis reports (KWU-SSAR for the 1,000 MWe PWR, KWU-PSAR Nuclear Power Plant ATUCHA II) are used. The assessment of the two different reactor types based on the IAEA Nuclear Safety Standards shows that the reactor plants designed according to the data given in the safety analysis reports of the plant manufacturer meet the design requirements laid down in the pertinent IAEA Standards. Die wesentlichen Sicherheitsaspekte einer 3-Loop-DWR-Anlage (1000 MWe) und einer Schwerwasserreaktor-Anlage entsprechender Leistung sind vom TUeV Baden e.V. in Zusammenarbeit mit Gabinete de Proteccao e Seguranca Nuclear, der fuer Kernkraftwerke zustaendigen Abteilung im Ministerio do Planeamento e da Administracao do Territorio, Lissabon, unter Zugrundelegung des IAEA-Regelwerkes untersucht worden. Die Grundlagen fuer die Untersuchung sind die Angaben zur Auslegung des Leichtwasserreaktors und des Schwerwasserreaktors in den Sicherheitsberichten (KWU-SSAR fuer den 1000 MWe-PWR, KWU-PSAR Nuclear Power Plant ATUCHA II). Die Bewertung der zwei unterschiedlichen Reaktortypen ist auf der Grundlage der IAEA Nuclear Safety Standards erfolgt; sie zeigt, dass die beiden Reaktoranlagen, erbaut nach den Angaben in den Sicherheitsberichten des Anlagenerrichters, die in den relevanten IAEA-Regeln festgelegten Anforderungen erfuellen.
