USA accelerating complexes for synchrotron radiation studies

Description

The state of the art at US facilities for the study of synchrotron radiation (SR) is described. On the 4-GeV storage ring SPEAR in Stanford a second channel of X-ray SR has come into operation. After the modernization of SPEAR the electron energy in the ring will be maintained in the range of 1.3 - 4 GeV at a current of 1.3 A at the lowest energy and 80 mA at the highest one. A design for the construction of two rings for SR investigations has been developed at the Wisconsin University. The minor ring for experiments in the ultraviolet range will have 24 windows for extracting the radiation. The major ring for low-energy X-radiation is designed for an energy of 2.5 GeV and extraction of 40 beams. The cost of the design has been estimated at 22 mln doll. The Brookhaven National Laboratory has proposed a design of two electron storage rings, one for 70O GeV with 16 beams in the ultraviolet range and the other for 2 GeV with 40 beams in the X-ray range with current storage up to 1 A
