Effects of gamma radiation on duralumin practical considerations

Description

The mechanical tensile and hardness properties of duralumin alloys of approximately 3.5 wt.% Cu taken from aircraft of type MIG-21 and SU-7B were investigated. Gamma radiation up to a dose of 342 KGY showed no significant effects as theory predicts. However, the properties of the unirradiated samples compared with previous literature values to within +-27% and 20% for the tensile and hardness properties, respectively. Several reasons for such discrepancies were discussed in details throughout this study. (author)
