Study of thermal spikes in crystals under ion bombardment
Description
The acoustic emission caused by thermoelastic stresses in the area of a material surrounding the thermal flare was studied. The phenomenon was studied in silicon monocrystals irradiated by helium ions at the energy up to 40 keV. The acoustic emission was recorded by piezoelectric pickup. The amplitude of the acoustic signal was obtained as linearly dependent on the energy and number of bombarding ions. The observed oscillation frequency spectrum is in the range of 102-104 Hz. In addition, data on various aspects of the thermal flare problem are reviewed
