The research activities in the field of chemical and nuclear technologies

A brief outline is given of the research activities in the field of management of radioactive wastes from nuclear power plants, with emphasis on the investigation of waste cementation, calcination and vitrification technologies and on the assessment of the disposal safety. At the Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear power plant, experiments were performed in the field of purification of decontaminated waste water from a special laundry. Other experiments concerned the decontamination of water from the fuel storage pool. The laboratory of fluoride chemistry and technology developed a procedure for the preparation of elementary fluorine. They are also engaged in the investigation into the separation of noble metals from nonmetallic waste materials and into the preparation of special inorganic fluorination agents. A new method was also developed for the separation of Cs, Sr and rare earths from acid high-level reprocessing wastes by means of an original reagent, viz. cobalt dicarbollide. The radiation chemistry department possesses some irradiation facilities; one of them is used for sterilization of medical material. The accelerator laboratory is equipped with two linear high-frequency electron accelerators, which are employed for irradiating small samples and in dosimetric experiments.
