Superconducting magnets for shaping beams of particles with a small life-time

Description

The construction is described in detail and calculated characteristics are reported of the Giperon-I superconducting (SP) magnet designed for forming beams of short-lived elementary particles. Giperon-I is a superconducting magnetic system used in creating a magnetic field with 6 T induction in a volume of 1 meter diameter and 40 cm height. In a nominal operating regime the stored magnetic energy is 24 MJ. The magnet winding is in the form of a disk coil. It is made from a copper stabilized superconducting ring and is located in a magnet cryostat with free-boiling liquid helium. The cross-section of the superconducting ring, 20 x 4 mm2, was selected for use of a winding without belting. Energy supply systems and shielding for the magnet winding were developed. The systems ensure current stabilization in the winding with a precision of +-0.1% for currents of 400-3200 A and disconnection of the supply with tapping of the stored energy from the magnet system upon appearance of a normal phase in the superconductor winding. The use of two helium refrigerators, type G-45, with a GD-80/80 reducing valve ensures normal operation of the equipment in long use
