Investigations into the processes of air and water migration of radionuclides at the 'Ukrytie' industrial site

  • 1. Myizhgaluzevij Naukovo-Tekhnyichnij Tsentr 'Ukrittya' NAN Ukrayini, Chornobil' (Ukraine)

Description

'Ukrytie' is a source of release into environment of contaminated air (content of main alpha-emitters activity is of 1...2 centre dot 10-16 Ci/I). Total release of activity is assessed to be about 30 mCi/year, where a part of main alpha-emitters is about 1.5 %. Released aerosols are dispersed within aerodynamic shadow of the building, including adjacent industrial site. Subsoil waters at the site are contaminated with 'accidental' radionuclides. Main source of subsoil water contamination at the site is accidental active layer. Transport of nuclides from active layer to subsoil water is due to atmospheric precipitations filtration. Connection between internal water of the 'Ukrytie' and subsoil water at the site has not yet found out. Real hazard of internal water release may be in case of significant basement isolation distortion
