Search for neutrinoless decays of the τ lepton with the ARGUS detector

Description

Upper limits on branching ratios for six neutrinoless leptonic, 16 semileptonic, two radiative-leptonic, two radiative-hadronic and three purely hadronic τ decays have been determined. The results improve over previously published ones by about a factor of two. For the first time the lepton and baryon-number violating decays τ- → anti p γ, τ- → anti p π0 and τ- → anti p η have been investigated. The 90% confidence level (CL) limits for the corresponding branching ratios amount to 2.9x10-4, 6.6 x 10-4 and 1.3x10-3 respectively. (orig.)

Es wurden obere Grenzen von Verzweigungsverhaeltnissen fuer sechs neutrinolose leptonische, 16 semileptonische, zwei radiativ-leptonische, zwei radiativ-hadronische und drei rein hadronische τ-Zerfaelle bestimmt. Die Resultate stellen eine Verbesserung gegenueber frueher veroeffentlichten Grenzen um etwa einen Faktor zwei dar. Erstmalig wurden die Lepton- und Baryonenzahl verletzenden Zerfaelle τ- → anti p γ, τ- → anti p π0 und τ- → anti p η untersucht. Die entsprechenden oberen Grenzen sind 2.9x10-4, 6.6x10-4 und 1.3x10-4 bei einem Konfidenzintervall von 90%. (orig.)
