The combustion synthesis of expanded, foamed composite materials

Description

The combustion synthesis of an expanded or foamed B4C-2Al2O3-xAl ceramic-metal composite has been investigated using the propagating mode of ignition for the reaction 2B2O3 + C + (4 + x)Al = B4C + 2Al2O3 + xAl in which x was varied between 0 and 3. The volatile B2O3 resulted in an expansion of 300-400% in the vertical direction of the composite and a minimum porosity of ≤65%. The effect of green density and reaction stoichiometry on product density, pore morphology, propagation rate and overall activation energy is discussed
