Description

The nonlinear optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles dispersed in poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer are investigated. PVDF/ZnO nanocomposites were prepared by mixing different concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles, as the filler, with PVDF, as the polymer matrix, using casting method. Acetone was used as a solvent for the polymer. FTIR spectra of the samples were analyzed thus confirming the formation of α and β phases. The absorbance spectra of the samples were obtained, thereby showing high absorption in the UV region. The linear absorption coefficient was calculated. The single-beam Z-scan technique was used to measure the nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption coefficient of the PVDF/ZnO nanocomposite samples. We observed that the nonlinear refractive index is in the order of 10-13 cm2/W with the negative sign, whereas the nonlinear absorption coefficient is in the order of 10-8 cm/W. (author)
