Study and development of analytical methods for the determination of natural radioactivity in waters

Description

Radon content in water samples was determined by both the emanation method and alpha counting with liquid scintillation detectors. In the first method common erlenmeyer flasks were succesfully employed as scintillation chambers by internally linning their walls with ZnS(Ag). The radon separation and concentration process showed high efficiency and supplied reproducible results. Only 0,06% of the 222Rn originally dissolved in the water sample was lost by retention into the system. The detection limit attained with the emanation method corresponded to a 222Rn concentration of 4.1pCi/l for 95% confidence level. The liquid scintillation counting technique provided rapid and reliable results. Insta-gel (commercial product) and toluene solutions of PPO and DMPOPOP were used as liquid scintillation counters. It was found that 95% of the 222Rn gas contained in the water sample remained dissolved in the liquid phase of the counting 'cocktail'. The detection limits were 117 pCi/l and 26pCi/l for Insta-gel and toluene solutions, respectively, for 95% confidence level. The radon concentrations measured in different water springs of Sao Paulo State, Brazil, were below 9.000pCi/l which is the maximum limit recommended for drinkable water. (Author)

Determinou-se o conteudo de radonio em amostras de agua pelos metodos de emanacao e de contagem alfa com detectores liquidos de cintilacao. No primeiro metodo utilizaram-se com bom sucesso erlenmeyers comuns como camaras de cintilacao, recobrindo internamente suas paredes com ZnS(Ag). O processo de separacao e concentracao de radonio apresentou eficiencia elevada e forneceu resultados reprodutiveis. Somente 0,06% do 222Rn dissolvido originariamente na amostra de agua foi perdido por retencao dentro do sistema. O limite de deteccao conseguido com o metodo de emanacao correspondeu a uma concentracao de 222Rn de 4,1 pCi/l para um nivel de confianca de 95%. A tecnica de contagem com cintiladores liquidos proporciona resultados rapidos e confiaveis. Utilizaram-se, como detectores liquidos de cintilacao, Insta-gel (produto comercial) e solucoes de PPO e Dimetil-POPOP em tolueno. Verificou-se que 95% do gas 222Rn contido na amostra de agua permaneceu dissolvido na fase liquida do 'coquetel' de contagem. Os limites de deteccao foram 117 pCi/l e 26 pCi/l para Insta-gel e solucoes de tolueno, respectivamente, para um nivel de confianca de 95%. As concentracoes de radonio medidas em diferentes fontes do Estado de Sao Paulo foram inferiores a 9.000 pCi/l que e o limite maximo recomendado para agua potavel. (Autor)
