Thermal radiation from dust grains formed in the ejecta of SN 1987A

Description
The results of calculations for the thermal radiation from dust grains formed in the ejecta of SN 1987A are presented. If the carbon-rich layer in the ejecta is mixed with the more massive oxygen-rich layer, graphite grains do not condense but Al2O3 grains condense first. The time development of observed infrared excess in the 10 micron region from day 465 to 635 can be well explained in terms of the thermal radiation from Al2O3 grains formed in the ejecta. The radii of Al2O3 grains are a few tens of A and the grain temperature is 450-400 K. The total infrared luminosity is about 10 to the 39th erg/s, which is comparable to the deficiency of the observed U to M bolometric luminosity after day 500 from that expected from the decays of Co-56 and Co-57. 16 refs
