Progress with the magnetic bolometer

  • 1. Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Garching (Germany). Walther-Meissner-Institut

Description

First results on a compound detector of 121 grams are shown. The magnetic bolometer, described here, is a compound detector, consisting of a magnetic sample of TmAg doped with 0.5% Er-168 which is glued on an absorber of silicon with a mass of 121 grams. From the signal height of 5.5 MeV α-particles and the noise of the detector an energy resolution of 360 eV rms can be obtained. The signal rise time depends strongly on temperature. The fastest signals (39 ms) are obtained at the lowest temperature (28 mK). (R.P.) 4 refs.; 5 figs
