Description

The effect of various pollutants on the quality of the Nairobi River waters was studied. Investigations were carried out over a period of nine months (November 1986-July 1986). Water was collected at seven identified points at regular intervals. Ten quality parameters namely temperatures, pH, conductance, biochemical oxygen demand(BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved solids, suspended solids, levels of chloride, nitrate and phosphate were monitored at each point. in addition, water samples were analysed for profiles of both dissolved and suspended forms of elements with special attention to the presence of toxic elements such as mercury, lead, cadmium, copper and zinc. The levels of pollutants and the quality parameters at selected points were also monitored at different times of the day. The study revealed that levels of pollutants varied considerably at the sampling points depending on the time of the day and seasons. Indifferences were drawn based on analytical data
