Thindown
Description
Recent irradiations of biological cells in vitro with very heavy ions, principally at the Unilac accelerator at GSI, Darmstadt, have led to important radiobiological results. The observed variation of the inactivation cross section with LET passes from the grain count regime to the track width regime to thindown. This sequence is demanded by track theory for sufficiently sensitive detectors. Thindown has long ago been observed with nuclear emulsions and scintillation counters leading to an interesting question: Can thindown be detected in CR-39. (author)
