Comparison of stopping power data files for protons and heavier ions

Description
A brief survey is given of the theory of ion energy losses during the passage through matter. Three published data files are analysed (Northcliffe-Schilling, Ziegler and Oldenburg-Booz) tabulating the values of ranges and electron, nuclear and total stopping powers for ions. A comparison is given for protons, alpha particles and oxygen ions; water was chosen as the stopping medium. It appears that there are significant differences between data from various sources.
