Development of stainless steel for sea water pump
- 1. Advanced Nuclear Equipment Research Inst., Tokyo (Japan)
Description
ANERI project developed 2 types of stainless steels-GSUS317J4L, GSCS16-for sea water pump materials. Development has been called for of a material more resistant to sea water corrosion. To meet such a demand, we have developed modified molybdenum austenitic stainless steel with reduction of carbon and addition of nitrogen. These materials exhibited satisfactory results in the mechanical strength test, fatigue strength test, pitting and crevice corrosion test, cavitation erosion and sand erosion test. A production test of large castings and forgings required for actual pump shafts, casings and impellers was carried out to establish repairing and welding techniques. (author)
