Nature of radicals resulting from γ-irradiation of starch and maltose

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow. Inst. Fizicheskoj Khimii

Description

ESR and gas chromatography methods are used to study starch and maltose radiolysis products, their radiochemical yields are determined. Irradiation was carried out at 60Co γ-source in sealed ampoules in air media at 77 K, the dose rate being 45 kGy/h. It is shown that radiochemical transformations are followed by decomposition of pyranose cycle. Radiation effect on starch results mainly in formation of the end macroradicals with unpaired electron localization in C-1 and C-4 positions
