Global overview of CO2 storage potential

Description
Since the 2005 IPCC Special Report on CO2 Capture and Storage, which indicated a global storage potential in geological formations of at least 2000 GtCO2, various methodologies for estimating storage capacities have been proposed. Many countries have estimated their CO2 storage potential, based on volumetric calculations, and about ten of them have developed atlases presenting their CO2 storage potential. For a number of potential storage sites, more precise estimates of storage capacity have been made, based on dynamic simulations of CO2 injection into the storage reservoir. Despite the high uncertainties related to the limited data available on the deep subsurface and the natural heterogeneity of the geological formations, the estimated global storage capacities are much higher than the storage needs to combat climate change. Abstract (French)
Depuis le rapport special du GIEC sur le captage et le stockage du CO2 paru en 2005, lequel indiquait un potentiel mondial de stockage dans les formations geologiques d'au moins 2 000 GtCO2, diverses methodologies d'estimation des capacites de stockage ont ete proposees. De nombreux pays ont estime leur potentiel de stockage du CO2 sur la base de calculs volumetriques, et une dizaine d'entre eux l'ont consigne dans des atlas. Des estimations plus fines des capacites d'un certain nombre de sites potentiels de stockage ont ete realisees sur la base de simulations dynamiques de l'injection de CO2 dans le reservoir de stockage. Malgre les fortes incertitudes liees notamment au peu de donnees disponibles sur le sous-sol profond et a l'heterogeneite naturelle des formations geologiques, les capacites de stockage estimees sont tres superieures aux besoins necessaires en la matiere pour lutter contre le rechauffement climatique.
