Calculation of fission fragments spectrum in a fissioning plasma
Description
A proposed concept for efficient and compact generation of multimegawatt space power utilizes an ultrahigh temperature vapor core reactor (UTVR) coupled with a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator. Highly enriched (∼85%) UF4 is used as the fuel, and metal fluorides are used as the working fluid in a Rankine-type closed cycle. This paper summarizes results of a model development for slowdown and relaxation of fission fragments in a superheated fuel/working fluid vapor mixture. The prediction of fission fragments spectrum is essential to determination of thermophysical and electrical properties of nonequilibrium partially ionized plasma in UTVR-MHD systems. This information is also needed to estimate the rate of direct energy deposit by fission fragments on the reactor wall
